Driving 101: 7 Tips to Help You Pass Your Canadian Road Test

driving

It’s a well-known fact that driving is a quintessential life skill. After all, commuting isn’t always an option because you want to be as comfortable as possible during your travels, especially if there’s a considerable distance. As such, driving is your best bet. However, you don’t just go on the road when you feel like it because you must learn how to drive first.

Learning how to drive isn’t easy, but it’s necessary. In a place like Canada, you need to have a driver’s license if you plan on getting around by car. You’ll need to take a road test involving driving on the open road. However, it can be a nerve-wracking experience. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be because we’ve listed some tips to help you, such as:

#1 – Check the Controls

This may sound like a no-brainer, but you must know where all the controls are before taking the road test. This includes the steering wheel, but it also consists of the pedals, signals, and other buttons. The controls also differ depending on the vehicle you’re driving, so remember that.

#2 – Follow Speed Limits

The speed limit ensures that all drivers go at the same pace, especially on the open road. This means that you must follow it. If you don’t, you risk getting into an accident. Worse, you might not even know that you’re speeding because you’ll be so focused on your driving skills.

#3 – Slowly Stop before Reaching a Stop Sign

You must stop before reaching a stop sign because that’s common sense. The problem is that some people out there never stop, which is why you must always slow down before the stop sign. Doing so will help you avoid any unnecessary accidents, which is the whole point of taking the road test. You might think that you won’t see a stop sign from far away, but it’s always a good idea to slow down just in case.

#4 – Don’t Forget to Use Your Parking Brake

Braking is one of the fundamental driving skills that you must master. However, you also need to use your parking brake, especially if you have to stop in an area with other cars, because it might not be safe if you stop without it.

For example, your car might be jostled if other vehicles surround it. Some of them might not even stop when you do, which could lead to an accident. As such, learn how to use your parking brake and use it whenever you park on the roadside.

#5 – Use Turn Signals

Turn signals are necessary because they communicate to other drivers that you’re changing lanes. The problem is that some people forget to use them, which is why you should use them to avoid accidents. Some people simply don’t have a good memory, so you should always use your turn signals.

#6 – Anticipate Other Cars’ Movements

You may not be a mind reader, but you should always assume that other drivers will try something. Since there are millions of drivers on the road, not all will follow the rules. For example, other cars might suddenly change lanes and create an accident. As such, you should always anticipate this behaviour. Doing so will help you avoid accidents because you can quickly react.

#7 – Keep Practicing

Above all else, you need to keep practicing if you ever want to become a good driver in the first place. Of course, we’re talking about practicing on the open road, but you can also practice in a controlled environment.

Aside from practicing, you should also read the driver’s manual and watch some tutorials online. This way, you’ll become familiar with many things to help you learn how to drive better.

Conclusion

Learning how to drive can be pretty stressful, especially when taking your road test. Taking a road test is essential, but it shouldn’t be a stressful experience. All that matters is following instructions to ensure you’ll ace the test with flying colours.

5 Tips To Help You Find The Right Driving School In Canada

Driving School

Are you sick and tired of sitting and waiting for the bus or taxi to arrive, not to mention the several minutes or even hours of journey to your destination? If so, then you should get a car. But of course, there’s a problem: you don’t have a license. Now, you could just go to the nearest driving centre to pick up your license, but did you know that picking the right driving school is vital to your success, not only in obtaining a license but also in becoming a safe driver? It’s true!

So, if you’re looking to finally earn your driving license in Canada, here’s how you can pick the right school:

1. Check Out Their Website

Visit their website and look for their driving safety record. If they boast of a good safety record, or even better, if they’ve got a perfect score, then they couldn’t be better! A safety record is a reflection of a school’s commitment to the safety of their students, and this is an excellent clue as to how they will treat you as a student.

2. Look At The Pricing

The next thing to look for when you visit their website is their pricing. This is important because if you’re strapped for cash, then you might have to skip a meal or two to afford the school fees, which is something you wouldn’t want to do just to learn to drive. So, before signing up for any school, make sure you can afford it!

3. See The Reviews

Another way to check out a school’s suitability for you is to read their reviews. They can be found on their website or on review sites if they don’t have one of their own. If the reviews are favourable, then you’re good to go! However, if you can find reviews that are bad, you should think twice before signing up with that school since these bad reviews are an indicator that they might not be the best school for you.

4. Look At The Instructor’s Qualifications

Another thing you’ll want to look at is the school’s instructor’s qualifications. If they’re qualified in their field, then your learning experience is bound to be great! If their instructors are not qualified, then please don’t sign up for their lessons. This can only mean a waste of your money and time!

5. Find Their Course Content

And lastly, look at their course content. This is when your research skills are put to the test. How to look at their course content? Simply Google the topics, and if you find that the school’s course content is very similar to that of other driving schools, then you’re all set! However, if the course content is very different from the other schools out there, then you should proceed with caution. Why? Because a school that teaches very different material is bound to have a different set of standards. This, of course, can be a good or bad thing, so tread carefully.

Conclusion

And there you have it! These are the steps you should take to ensure that you get the right driving school for you. Picking the right school is the first step to getting your license, so make sure you do your homework before deciding on a school for yourself. This gives you a great head start in ensuring that you get your license and, more importantly, becoming a responsible and safe driver.

4 Benefits You Can Have from Going to Driving School

driving

Sure, you can ask your dad to assist you when learning how to drive in an open parking space where there is no one else. You can definitely learn some important skills to ensure you have control over the vehicle. However, how about other things, like road rules, tips and tricks, and more? Plus, how do you feel if your dad snaps at you for making a mistake? These questions might fill your mind, leaving you wondering if your father, or essentially anyone else, is equipped to train you for the road. Well, that’s why we’re here today to give you a better solution: a driving school!

Today, we want to share with you all the benefits you can have from going to driving school:

1. Boosts Your Confidence Levels When Driving

When learning the basics of driving, one is bound to make mistakes at first. That’s alright, and that’s normal because everyone did when they first started driving. The problem is that you may get frustrated because you are afraid to go out on the road. So, do you want to feel confident when driving on the road? Then, you should consider going to a driving school.

From driving school, you will get some tips and tricks that will help you drive with confidence. There are so many courses you can take, from various kinds of lessons and more! Take our advice, and you will be able to conquer the road and never have any problems when driving with no one else in the passenger seat!

2. Enjoy Training in a Safe Place

The last thing you want to happen is to be out on the road and drive in an open parking space, where there are other vehicles and people around. You may want to save money by driving around in an open parking space, but if you have a passenger with you for any reason, that could be a problem. You could easily get distracted by the person sitting in the passenger seat. If that person keeps telling you what to do, you may end up ignoring the traffic rules, which can lead to disastrous outcomes.

For that reason, we highly recommend that you attend a driving school that offers proper training. Make sure to go to a driving school so that you can learn how to drive safely while not worrying about anyone else!

3. Access to More Powerful Training Techniques

When you attend a driving school, you will get access to many courses that will allow you to learn a lot more about driving. Imagine you have to learn how to park between two other cars. You can do it by yourself, but will you be confident that you can do it safely?

More importantly, you will be taught how to control the vehicle properly when your body is not aligned or how to control when your shoulders are not parallel to the road. These are just some of the things you will learn when going to a driving school. All these courses will ensure that you can drive properly and safely, so you never have to worry about getting into an accident again!

4. Teachers Are Knowledgeable and Experienced

The last reason to consider going to a driving school is that the teachers are knowledgeable and experienced. They all have the proper training and certifications to teach you everything you need to know in a safe and secure environment.

The teachers will go over things like your blind spots, how to drive properly, how to practice parking and more! If you want to learn how to drive properly, then you should go to a reputable driving school.

Conclusion

Now that you know all the benefits you can have from attending a driving school, you might want to consider joining them. However, do not just join any driving school. Instead, check for the best one first. After all, you want to make sure you can trust the teachers and that they are knowledgeable and experienced enough to help you learn how to drive properly!

Beginner Driving: Common Problems Faced By Learners

driving

As exciting as it can be, learning how to drive can be a little overwhelming if you’re just getting started. It’s a lot to take in, after all, and you might have some concerns before you even get started. To help give you an idea, let’s break down some of the most common problems learners face. With the help of instructors, you’re sure to find the right mindset to get into driving.

How Gears Work In Manual Vehicles

The first thing people usually ask about is how gearing works in a manual car. In simple terms, each gear is in charge of a certain speed range when driving. Lower gears will be able to push your car more but won’t be able to go as fast. Higher gears, meanwhile, can go really fast but have a hard time moving your car forward if it’s at a stop.

Normally, instructors will ease you into the groove by having you practice with just the first gear. Once you’ve got that down, you’ll move on to the next, practicing how to shift as you go along.

How the Clutch Works

Now to the part that causes a lot of new drivers to think twice about their decision. Learning how to balance the accelerator and the clutch is not as hard as you might think but learning how it works might help give you an idea of how to achieve it.

You can think of the clutch as the thing that helps your car “accept” the new gear you’ve selected. So, when changing gears, remember that you first need to engage the clutch, shifting only when you’ve done that. After choosing the right gear, slowly release the pedal while giving your car a little more gas.

Driving in Reverse

It’s no surprise that people initially find it hard to drive in reverse but it’s a skill that’s easily learned. Lessons focused on this will usually have the learned drive a basic path in reverse, looking at the back only through the side window. Over time, the difficulty of the course will increase and then, eventually, the learner will have to learn how to reverse the car with only the rearview mirror as a reference.

Parking Woes

Common enough to become a popular joke among new drivers, parking can cause more than a few people to worry about their skills. No compromises here as this skill is a necessity. The lessons will cater to the learner, though, and newer drivers will only be asked to park in easy parking spots. As they develop their skill, the instructor will have them park in increasingly difficult scenarios.

Driving Etiquette

Most often left little attention is driving etiquette. Before your instructor allows you to drive alone in public, you will need to show that you know the rules of the road and the courtesies involved with driving amongst other people. Turn indicators, road signs, and speed restrictions are just some of the topics under this and it’s best if you could put time into learning the theory before you even get in a car.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, learning how to drive a car is a fun and exhilarating experience, albeit one that requires learners to pay close attention to what they’re doing. It might seem like a chore now but if it makes you a better and safer driver, it’s effort well worth it.

Blind Spots and Shoulder Checks: What You Need to Know

side mirror
Driving is full of maneuvers, some of which, when completed correctly and appropriately, will protect both you and other drivers on the road. Knowing why and how to execute these maneuvers is essential to learning how to drive. As a responsible driver, it’s important that you continue to maintain your skills. This is why we thought it would be useful to put together an article discussing one of the most important maneuvers you need to know on the road: shoulder checks. Indeed, shoulder checks are a maneuver that all experienced drivers should be familiar with. If this is something that you’re interested in learning more about, read on as we break down everything you need to know about shoulder checks.

What Is See-Think-Do?

See-Think-Do is a strategy that new drivers can use to respond more effectively to their surroundings. It’s broken down into the following three steps:
  1. See: Take the time to scan the area for hazards. Scan the area by keeping your eyes moving and active. Watch for other road users and the areas where hazards can occur.
  2. Think: Think about which hazards will be the most dangerous and which you’ll need to respond to first, as well as about possible safe solutions for each hazard.
  3. Do: Based on your current situation, perform an action that will keep you and others safe.

What Are Blind Spots?

Each vehicle has areas without direct visibility, called blind spots. These blind spots are at the front, back, and along the sides of the vehicle. They cover the same areas in each vehicle, but depending on the size and shape of each vehicle, these areas are much larger and more affective. To eliminate as much of the blind spots as you can, adjust your mirrors so you can see as much of the side blind spots as you can. Some vehicles nowadays are equipped with blind spot detectors and cameras, but because these technologies cannot detect hazards outside of the area covered by their cameras, they should not be relied on and you should still be checking your mirrors and turning your head to look back while backing up.

How Should Shoulder Checks Be Performed?

New drivers don’t always find shoulder checking easy for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that it can be frustrating to determine what exactly you’re looking for. For example, how far do you need to turn your head? Are you looking through the driver’s window, or the mirror? Are you looking through the back door’s window? The second reason it can be difficult is that it can be intimidating or overwhelming to take your eyes off the road ahead even for a second, when you’re first getting used to being behind the wheel of a vehicle. Some drivers worry that they’ll miss something critical if they look away. Once you break down the why and the how of shoulder checking, it is easier to complete the safety check. The reason for shoulder checking is to see what is in your side blind spot. A side view mirror reveals a portion of what is beside you, but shoulder checking gives you a full picture of your surroundings. When you complete a shoulder check, your head should move just enough to give you a visual of what’s behind you. Despite its name, you should never turn your entire body to the back as this can be incredibly dangerous. You should look at least 45 degrees over your shoulder in the direction that you are scoping out. As your head moves around, glance in the rearview door window to see what is in that blind spot and then look forward again once you have seen the space. And as far as failing to see something behind goes, a shoulder check should take a literal second; it’s the same amount of time that our eyes take to check the rearview window, side mirror, speedometer, or any other gauges. So when should you check your blind spots? Before changing your position or direction in the lane. This includes changing lanes, completing a turn, pulling over to the side of the road, and parking. A blind-spot check ensures that the space in the direction you’re moving into is clear. One of the instances this is often forgotten is upon leaving our vehicles – we should complete a mirror and blind-spot check before we open the door to exit the vehicle.

Conclusion

We hope this article proves to be useful when it comes to helping you gain a better understanding of shoulder checks. While they may seem tricky at first, the information that we’ve laid out here should make things infinitely easier for you. Feel free to go back to this article if you ever feel like you need a quick refresher on shoulder checks. If you need help with driving, why not try out a car driving school? At Midtown Driving School we have designed classes with the busy student in mind. We have a very flexible system of classes that allows students to take the classes in any order they wish and at their own pace.

Here’s an Essential Guide to Following Distance

driving
Spatial and temporal margins are essential. Not only do you need to let enough space between you and other vehicles, but you also need to be far enough behind in traffic so that you can see hazards, consider your options, and react accordingly. While following the vehicle ahead of you, you may run out of time to respond if you drive too close to them.

Measuring Your Following Distance

Generally, the right following distance can be found by choosing an object by the road to use as your reference point. This could be anything like a sign, lamp post, fire hydrant, and such. When the vehicle ahead of you passes by the object, begin the counting per second. You’ll know if you’re too close if you reach the object before you reach the recommended number of seconds.

Observing Ample Following Distance in Different Conditions

You should keep a two-second distance between you and the car in front of you in good weather, on clear roads, and when everyone’s going the speed limit. If you’re on a high-speed road like a freeway or a highway, this should be increased to a minimum of three seconds.  When conditions are less than ideal, such as during a storm or when you’re driving on a compromised road, it is best to leave a minimum of four seconds between you and the vehicle ahead of you.

Comparing Guidelines Between Motorcycles and Semi-Trucks

As a motorcycle driver, it is important to stay well ahead of vehicles. Since you’re on a smaller vehicle, it may be easy to go unseen by other drivers, especially when they’re distracted. Keeping your distance helps avoid being hidden in the blind spot of the vehicle’s rear right side. This will help ensure your safety and that of those around you. When you are a semi-truck driver, on the other hand, you should stay well-behind vehicles. Doing so gives you time to brake when they stop suddenly. While passenger vehicles and light truck drivers abide by a general minimum of two seconds distance when following others, semi-trucks, buses, and other large, heavy vehicles need to comply with a minimum of five seconds.

Practice Driving Defensively

If someone is following too closely, the best thing to do is slow down slightly to increase the space in front of you. This will give you room to stop gradually if the need arises, and it actually decreases your chances of being hit by the tailgater. If they are being particularly annoying, you can change lanes to let them pass or pull over altogether to allow them to overtake you. Stay safe by not speeding up or giving in to the tailgater, and always keep your own following distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.

Conclusion

Driving defensively is a strategy that will help keep you and everyone else safe. By staying a safe distance behind vehicles in front of you, you will be able to decrease your chances of getting in an accident or being a part of one. You can also use this time to scan the road and your surroundings, helping you avoid any hazards that you may encounter. When driving defensively, you always have time to react to any unexpected changes. New to driving? Take car lessons in Langley to improve your skills. Why Students Should Learn About Defensive Driving

woman driving

Driving is an activity that every person must learn. From gaining experience in the beginning, to eventually gaining a driver’s license and becoming a fully capable driver. The road is full of peril for new fresh-faced drivers, so having some defensive driving techniques will go a long way.

The Need for Defensive Driving Education for Students

The need for defensive driving education is something that should be taught in schools because it is a vital part of being a good driver.

Defensive driving education is designed to teach drivers how to drive in a manner that minimises the risk of getting into an accident. This helps protect your vehicle, passengers, and the other drivers out on the road. Defensive driving also teaches drivers about road laws and how to observe other drivers and their behaviours.

Things to Know to Be Good at Driving

Check out these things below to help you become a good defensive driver:

1. Always Think Safety First

Always keep safety in mind when you’re out on the road. Driving defensively is a great way to mitigate risk and keep yourself and others safe in the process. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your driving style. You can do plenty of things to drive safely without being a big pushover.

2. Pay Attention to Your Surroundings

Always take a moment to survey your surroundings before you switch to drive. It’s important to look for anything that could present a danger to you, your passengers, or other drivers. Look out for potholes, damaged roads, and anything else that could make the road less safe.

Check your blind spots before switching lanes, and always be mindful of pedestrians.

3. Don’t Rely on Other Drivers

Driving defensively doesn’t mean you have to rely on other drivers to drive safely. It’s important to take the initiative and do your part, even if other people aren’t.

This means keeping your eyes on the road and not checking your phone while you’re stopped at a red light. You can avoid distracted driving by pulling over to complete your call or sending a text instead.

It’s also important to change lanes safely. Make sure to use your signals, look over your shoulder, and wait for an opening in traffic before you put your blinker on and try to change lanes.

4. Be Patient

Being patient is an important part of being a defensive driver. Learn to wait your turn and never tailgate. Always maintain a safe distance between you and other drivers, and don’t take it personally if someone doesn’t let you into their lane.

5. Follow the 3- to 4-Second Rule

A lot of people find it hard to follow the three to four-second rule. This rule says that you should always maintain a distance of at least two to three seconds between you and the car in front of you.

By following this rule, you’ll maintain a fairly safe distance in case other drivers do something unexpected. It also helps you slow down when you need to, which is great in case you need to avoid an accident or change lanes.

Drive Safely

Learning how to drive defensively is a great way to become a better driver and keep yourself safe on the road. It is always good to develop your driving skills, and it is great to explore different driving philosophies so you can decide which one works best for you.

Of course, there are plenty of ways to learn how to drive defensively. And if you want, you can also take a defensive driving course for a more structured lesson. Having that type of experience under your belt can be a great start to your driving career.

Why You Should Enroll Your Teenager in a Driving Training Class

Most teenagers are excited to get their driver’s license and the freedom to drive wherever they need and want to. However, not many are as excited to take actual driving classes. As a parent or guardian, it’s your responsibility to ensure that your child learns how to drive the right way.

Here are some reasons to enroll your teenager in a reputable car driving school for proper driver training class:

For Your Teen to Learn About Driving Laws

Driving laws don’t change often, but they do change. This means that you need to keep your teenager up-to-date on the latest changes pertaining to driving laws, including how to be a safe and responsible driver. In addition to learning about the actual laws and penalties, your teenager will also learn how to be safe on the road.

For Them to Get Professional Guidance

Professionals, such as driving instructors, know the ins and outs of being a safe and responsible driver. They will also point out any flaws and help your teen understand what must be done to improve.

To Give Them the Confidence They Need to Drive

Your teenager may or may not have the confidence to drive, depending on their personality. No matter their level of confidence, it’s crucial to build their confidence by encouraging them and giving them positive feedback. A good driving class will provide your teen with the hands-on experience that they need to get out there and start driving.

For Them to Learn Defensive Driving Techniques

Many of the accidents on the road occur because of poor driving and defensive driving techniques. These techniques include avoiding accidents by using all five senses, maintaining a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you, and maintaining a safe distance from the car next to you. Defensive driving techniques are essential if your teen wants to avoid an accident and maintain his or her driving record.

To Get Them to Unlearn Wrong Driving Tips They May Have Learned from Their Peers

Even if your teenager has taken an official class or read about it, they may still be practicing the wrong driving tips. Peer influence is difficult to avoid, but courses and hands-on experience will help your teen learn the correct driving tips and unlearn the wrong ones that they may have learned over time.

To Teach Them How to Handle a Driving Emergency

If you and your teenager are ever in a car accident, they must know what to do. The main purpose of a good driving school is to teach your teen about ditching and accident intervention. Ditching is when your teen leaves the vehicle in an emergency situation, such as on a steep incline or when there’s a fire, and the car is filling up with smoke. The ditching procedures differ from case to case, but your teen should at least know about basic ditching procedures.

Conclusion

There are numerous benefits to enrolling your teenager in good driving classes in Langley, such as learning about driving laws, getting professional guidance, and learning defensive driving techniques. Now that you know the benefits of taking a driving class, you can ensure that your teen gets behind the wheel with confidence and knows how to be a safe and responsible driver.

Midtown Driving School offers professional driving classes in Langley and nearby areas for teens and adults alike. Enroll your teen today and get peace of mind knowing they’re ready to drive when they get their license!

8 Important Considerations When Finding a Driving School

Knowing how to drive is quintessential to daily living. After all, you can’t go from one place to another by walking, especially if it’s too far away. Sure, you can commute, but there are times that you’ll be too lazy jumping from one bus to another. For this reason, owning a car makes travel easier. However, you need to take driving lessons first, which means studying in a driving school.

A driving school is fundamental in preparing you for the road. If you do not know the basics of driving, such as adequately handling a car, you may hurt someone while driving. Driving-related issues aren’t easy to handle, so you’d do well to enroll in an excellent driving school. This article will discuss the necessary considerations when looking for a driving school, so read on below to get started.

#1 – Accreditation

The first thing you have to look for when searching for a driving school is its accreditation. Of course, you don’t want to take your life into the hands of an untrustworthy institution. When you enroll with an accredited school, you’re guaranteed that it has been thoroughly vetted and regulated. Moreover, accredited institutions are the only ones that have the proper certifications to allow an individual to take the road.

#2 – Years of Experience

You’ll also need to look into the years of experience that the driving school has. If the school is new, you might as well look for another one. Too many accidents happen whenever novice drivers are involved. On the other hand, it probably has a stellar reputation if a school has been around for over a decade.

#3 – Female Instructors for Female Learners

It’s no secret that female learners are more comfortable learning from female instructors, so you should ask if a driving school has them. This way, you can ensure that you won’t have any problems when learning the ins and outs of driving.

#4 – Payment and Class Flexibility

You should enroll in an accredited driving school with flexible payment options, such as online payments. This way, you won’t have to worry about cash flow issues. Also, ask if the school offers extended hours, such as evening classes. This way, you’ll be able to take courses whenever you want.

#5 – Prioritizing Safety and Proper Guidance

The most important thing is to learn how to drive the right way. The best driving school should prioritize safety and proper guidance. After all, the goal of driving is to take a trip to a destination safely, so you shouldn’t settle for anything less.

#6 – Drivers’ Insurance

The school should also provide insurance coverage for you during the driving lessons. This way, you can be insured in case of an accident. The insurance will cover you for the duration of the classes.

Additionally, drivers’ insurance also helps because it can reduce the likelihood of you committing a driving offence or other reckless driving-related acts.

#7 – Balance between Practical and Theoretical Classes

The classes offered by a driving school should also have a good balance between practical and theoretical lessons. This way, by the time you take your road test, you’ll be well-versed in the ins and outs of driving. You’ll also be able to pass your driving test the first time around, which is always a satisfying feeling.

Practical and theoretical driving knowledge also helps because it helps calibrate your senses with how you handle the car. Driving is about being able to feel the road more than it is about memorizing important driving-related facts, so a balance must be struck.

#8 – Will Teach More than Just Driving

Finally, the best driving school should be able to teach more than just driving. For example, it should also be able to guide you through things like the importance of driving defensively, how to avoid getting a traffic ticket, and roadside emergencies. You’d be glad you took these classes because you’ll be able to handle a rather stressful situation with composure.

Conclusion

Knowing how to drive is an important life skill, but you can only achieve this by enrolling in a driving school. This makes it crucial to attend a driving school that has been repeatedly vetted for the quality of its services. When you enroll in the best driving school, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge necessary to take on the road.
